Choosing Truth

In a time when our young people are bombarded with bias, lies, and relativism from a secular culture, it's more important than ever for adult believers to show them truth---that which aligns with reality. Join us today as Tish Kerby, one of our guest bloggers, shares a personal story about choosing truth.

This week I was asked to speak to my son’s middle school class on "South Africa.” So, I called the teacher and explained that my presentation would have to include talking about racism. She thanked me and told me she looked forward to the presentation.

See, there are a few things you need to know…

I was born in South Africa.
I was 11 years old when Nelson Mandela became the first black president in a country known worldwide for its racism (Apartheid).
I was born again as a Christian when I was 12.

Was I going to agree with the culture around me or the God above me?

So for me, my memories of South Africa and my experiences there are interwoven with racist events. As I was talking to my son’s class, I challenged them with these statements: "I was raised with racism, but I chose to believe the truth of God's Word instead. God sees all people groups, regardless of physical differences, as created in His image. At some point, I had to make a decision as a young person.… Was I going to agree with the culture around me or the God above me?”

My son, now almost the same age I was when I came to this crossroads, has to make the same choice…. Will he identify people around him by what culture says or what God defines? I feel the weight of this for him and the many young people I know. We, the adults, must help equip this generation to stand against the shifting sand and instead stand firm on God's Word. We should teach them the truth of how God identifies them and how they need to speak that in love to one another.

It is very simple, although we try to complicate it and trip over our alphabet. You are either for God or against Him. We are either saved or lost. We either believe His Word or don't. And if we do, we need to share it with those seeking the truth so they, too, can be identified as a "child of God."

Galatians 3:26-28
For in Christ Jesus, you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

I challenge you to pray for this younger generation and help equip them. They crave belonging and purpose—both of which are fulfilled in Christ. He will use them mightily to fulfill His purpose through those who are His.
