Brown Bear & Grizzly Bear

Start at the brown bear and then work you way over to the grizzly bear exhibit. You can share the following information with those that are with you. The student worksheets have blanks for them to fill in. The answers are the BOLD words in the following statements:

1. Brown bears can be found in many habitats, from the fringes of DESERTS to HIGH MOUNTAIN FORESTS and ICE fields.

2. Just like the KODIAK bear, the grizzly bear is a subspecies of the BROWN BEAR. The difference is regional: bears found INLAND are referred to as grizzlies, while those on the COASTS are known as brown bears.

4. The size of brown bears is the most VARIABLE of modern bears. The normal range of physical dimensions for a brown bear is a head-and-body length of 4 FEET 7 INCHES to 9 FEET 2 INCHES and a shoulder height of 2 FEET 4 INCHES to 5 FEET.

5. Grizzly bears are protected by law in every state in the US except ALASKA!

6. Grizzly bears can run up to 30 MILES PER HOUR!

7. Grizzly bears can stand up to 8 FEET TALL and weigh up to 800 POUNDS!

8. Grizzly bears are very good SWIMMERS.

9. Grizzly bears are OMNIVORES which means they eat PLANTS and ANIMALS!

10. Grizzly bears hibernate for 5 to 7 MONTHS a year.

Here's some additional information for you to share with those that are with you:

A. Grizzly bears were once ranged across North America from California to the Great Plains, and from Mexico all the way up into Alaska.

B. When the grizzly bear was listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1975, their population in the lower 48 states was down to less than 1000 bears.

C. Grizzly bears can eat up to 90 pounds of food each day. That’s like 360 quarter pounders from McDonalds.
