1962 Match History

The Kentuckians

“Renesto and Hamilton, as The Bolos, set a number of attendance records in the Carolinas-Virginia area during the early ’60s. Six-man matches with The Missouri Mauler against The Kentuckians and Haystacks Calhoun established attendance records in such venues as the Charlotte Coliseum, Dorton Arena in Raleigh and the Greenville Memorial Auditorium. Renesto and Hamilton also set attendance marks throughout the territory for tag-team matches against The Kentuckians and Johnny Weaver and Haystacks Calhoun. Those attendance records are still unbroken at the Charlotte Coliseum and Dorton Arena.”

January 26, 1962 – Vineland, NJ – ARTICLE

“The main event, a tag team match between Puerto Rican stars Miguel Perez and Pete Sanchez and a villanous (sic) Karl von Hess teamed with a despicable Man Mountain Campbell, was won by the spectators.
Perez and Sanchez found they had wonderful allies in the bleachers.  For it was discovered that Campbell and von Hess had ears which could not absorb noise.
Although they took knees in the neck, kicks in the groin, eye gouges and head stompings without much adverse effect, they were unable to wrestle when the crowd yelled.
Both of them would release their dirty hold on an opponent and cover their ears with their hands, expressions of great pain on their faces.  Sanchez and Perez used this to their advantage and took the last two falls and victory.
At the card’s end, an informal newspaperman’s poll came up with the following selectins: (sic) most vigorous program thrower, Carl Bullwinkle of row C, section B; best yeller of Spanish criticisms, Conceeta Santos of row D, section A.
Also, loudest screamer, the lady who mistook the ear of the TIMES JOURNAL representative for a microphone; best hole-burner-in-the-clothes-of-a-neighbor, the cigar bearing gentlemen who sat on the newspaperman’s right and most obnoxious fan, the eight-year-old who accompanied the reporter to the match.”

The 6 foot 10 inch Smith and his 6-6 hillbilly sidekick wil be joined by Jesse James while Tillet and Madrid will be ably assisted by coon hunter Joe McCarthy.
Smith opined that he and his partner comprise a pretty big team but he says the likes of McCarthy, Tillet and Madrid have caused a pretty big mess in the local wrestling scene.  Tiny promises that Big Boy Brown can more about with the agility of a light-weight and will be having their tag team opponents seeking cover long before the two out of three fall to a finish scuffle is ended.

“For Hanson and Paidousis, who have faced the best, Wednesday night serves as a chance for redemption.  Their last two appearances against Big Boy Brown and Tiny Anderson resulted in a draw (when both gladiators in the ring were unconscious) and in a disputed defeat.”

“A new name was placed on the heads of Ivan Kameroff and John Smith after wrestling action at Park Center last night, they’re now known as “the chain gang.”
Smith and his pal were disqualified in their heated event with Tiny Anderson and Big Boy Brown when an angry Smith grabbed a chain he had brought to ringside and bashed in Brown’s forehead.  Blood flowed like a broken faucet.
“They had played it dirty with my partner all evening,” bellowed Kameroff.  “I do not blame John for what he did.  I would do the same.
The teams had split falls when the deadly object was used as a set of steel knuckles by the firey Smith.”

THE KENTUCKIANS are Jake (Tiny) Smith, a seven-footer weighing 355 from Cornettsville, Ky., and Luke (Big Boy) Brown 6-9 and 346 from Jeff, Ky.
The match between the Kentuckians and Malenko and his partner is billed as a special event with the championship contest a main event.

Hillbilly Giants to Wrestle
“Two of the biggest men in professional wrestling-Jake Smith and Luke Brown-hillbillies from Kentucky weighing over 300-pound apiece, will take on the masked Assassins here next week, it was announced after the masked men had defeated Don Curtis and Lennie Montana last night at Legion Arena.
One of the hillbillies is seven feet tall and the other 6-9, it was announced.”

Excerpt from: Assassin The Man Behind The Mask

“Getting back to Florida, one afternoon, we were in the dressing room at the Tampa Sportatorium, the building which doubled as the Florida wrestling office and the TV studio for the television matches.  Eddie Graham walked in with some pictures in his hand and said, “Do either of you know these guys?”
I looked at the pictures and saw that one of them was Tiny Anderson.  Tiny stood more than 6-foot-11 tall and weighed around 350 pounds, which was an oddity back in those days.  I said, “I know Tiny Anderson.  I worked with him a lot in Oklahoma when I was just getting started.  I don’t know the other guy.”
Eddie said, “Well, they’re in the Carolinas and Crockett wants to move them out.  Do you think you guys could do anything with ’em?”
Tom didn’t know either one of them, so he asked me, “What do you think?”
I said, “I worked a lot of matches with Tiny in Oklahoma when he first broke into the business.  He hasn’t been working very long, but he’s a big son-of-a-gun.”
For the first few years, he wrestled as Tiny Anderson.  After not seeing him for a few years, I started to hear people talk about someone named Grizzly Smith.  I asked, “Who the (blank) is Grizzly Smith?”
“You know.  One of the Kentuckians”
“Do you mean Tiny Anderson?”
“Yeah!”
His partner, who I didn’t know, was Luke Brown.  Luke was not 7-feet tall, but he outweighed Griz by about 40 pounds.  The long and short of it is, Eddie decided to bring them into the territory.  A the time, Eddie was splitting the heat between us and the Von Brauners.  The Von Brauners was already personally involved in angles with them so that allowed him to program Tom and I with Griz and Luke.
For the next seven days, Tom and I rode up and down the roads, discussing what we could do with Griz and Luke.  We decided to make big, powerful giants out of them.  Tom and I worked hard to get those two guys over.  When we got them in the ring, we made them look strong.  We never took them off of their feet.  Consequently, they really got over with the fans.”

“A standing room only crowd of 4,689 fans watched the Kentuckians, Jake Smith and Luke Brown, make a winning debut at the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory last night.
To the delight of the near capacity crowd, the two bearded giants, Jake stands an even seven feet and Luke is six feet, nine inches, won in straight falls over Kurt and Karl Von Brauner, the German twins managed by Saul Weingeroff.
The Kentuckians used the Kentucky stump puller hold to win the first fall over the Von Brauners and a series of smashed for their straight falls triumph.

Kentucky Bear Hug Brings Victory Again
“The Phenomenal bearded giants from Kentucky last night defeated an opposing team of three men before a turn-away capacity crown.
No admissions were sold for some time prior o the start of the bouts.  People who had been standing in line were told the house was full.
The Kentuckians agreed to wrestle The Great Malenko, Jack Vanskey and Tom Perna when Malenko’s intended partner, Ivan Bodoupney, a 440-pound Russian, failed to make plane connections.
The spectacular upside down bear hug – a submission hold – was responsible for winning both falls. Luke (Big Boy) Brown won the first over Perna.  Jake (Tiny) Smith – the 7-ft. one- won the second over Vanskey.
The Kentuckians defeated the masked Assassins here the same way last week and may face them again next Monday as the masked men have been screaming for a return bout ever since.”

“The giant bearded Kentuckians, Jake (Tiny) Smith and Luke (Big Boy) Brown, top the card in a return bout against the masked Assassins for two out of three falls without a time limit and with the winners taking the purse.
The Kentuckians defeated the masked men two weeks ago when the Assassins couldn’t return o the ring for the final fall.  They had been squeezed unmercifully in upside-down bear hugs and were in no condition to do anything but like down peacefully.
Promoter Milo Steinborn said he had never seen the masked men so subdued.”

Kentuckians Beaten By Germans
“Pursuit of one of the Von Brauners by Luke Brown cost the Kentuckians a match with the Germans before 4,516 fans at the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory last night.
Kurt and Karl, using advantage of a no disqualification rule, won the first fall of the match with 7-foot Jake Smith the victim.  Smith squared the match by using the Kentucky stump-puller hold in the second fall.
In the heavy-fisted third fall, Brown had Kurt at a disadvantage, then pursued Karl out of the ring when the German twin tried to aid his brother.  Brown did not return inside the 20 count and the decision went to the Germans amid the protests of fans.
The attendance was the second largest of the Summer and third straight week in which more than 4,000 fans have jammed the Armory.”

Hillbilly Frightened By 13th
“”If Ah’d known today was the 13th Ah’d never have agreed to wrestle those Germans”, Luke (Big Boy) Brown admitted this morning at a motor court where the two giant bearded Hillbillies are resting up for tonight’s match against the German team of Karl and Kurt von Brauner.  Matches begin at 8:30.
Brown admitted he was superstitious despite the poo-poohing of his partner, seven-foot-tall Jake Smith.
Smith’s comments to the contrary were called “sweet talk” by the 6-9 Brown who said “Something terrible could happen tonight – I ain’t never wrestled on the 13th of any month before.
The Kentuckians meet the Germans in the featured tag event for two out of three falls in a one hour time limit.”

Steinborn Injured In Mat Action
“Dick Steinborn has a painful ankle and elbow today while Jake Smith has a bandaged head.
They both took part in two wrestling matches, both of which were stopped by the referee last night at Legion Arena.
Smith was clobbered over the head by Kurt von Brauner.  The German used a weapon the Steer’s Horn the Hillbillies carry into the ring with them.  Smith was bleeding freely when the match was stopped.
Smith and his partner Luke (Big Boy) Brown, were winners of the match when the Germans were disqualified because of Kurt’s attack.”

Assassins Lose After Bomb Hoax
“Len Montana and Mike Paidousis won the world tag team wrestling championship at Fort Homer Hesterly last night after a bomb scare dispatched police to the armory.
Montana and Paidousis defeated the Assassins before 3,434 fans.
A bomb scare call came to the Armory after Negro customers overflowed into the white seating section and wrestling officials gave the Negroes their money back and asked them to leave.
The armory was not cleared, however, and the call proved to be a hoax.
Jake Smith and Luke Brown, the Kentuckians, were the victims of their temper in a first round match with the Von Brauners.  The bearded giants hit the referee and were disqualified.”

“Tom and I left Florida in September, 1962 and went back to Atlanta on a full-time basis.  While we were there, Griz called us, saying that he wanted to get out of Florida.  “Why don’t you come in here?” I suggested.  The Florida tape was being shown in Atlanta at the time so they were primed to come into the territory.
Before that could be arranged, though, Jim Crockett made us a deal to bring Tom and I into the Carolinas.”

Russian Duo Falls To Kentucky Tandem
“It’s a good thing the Russians –  The Great Malenko and The Crusher – did not put their belt up for grabs last night.
For the Kentucky tandem of Luke Brown and Jake Smith smashed the Russians into submission in two straight falls before a full house at the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory Last night.
Malenko, who sidelined the Kentuckians’ second Eddie Graham with a back injury four months ago, protested the fact that the blond Tampa adonis was to second his opponents last night.  Thus, the world heavyweight tag-team championship was not put on the line.
The Kentuckians were actually victims of the first fall but Southern Wrestling Alliance troubleshooter Red Cameron reversed the decision because of the unfair tactics employed by the Russians.
Then in the second fall, The Crusher and Brown collided in the center of the ring, knocking both unconscious.  But Brown regained consciousness in time to roll over on The Crusher, while Cameron counted him out.  Meanwhile, Malenko was trying desperately to get to his fallen partner, but ran into the stiff right hand of Graham.  Graham beat off Malenko’s advances, sending the defeated Russians to the dressing room.”

The Kentuckians won in straight falls.  Malenko and the Crusher actually pinned Smith in the opening fall but were promptly disqualified and had the decision reversed by Red Cameron when they booted the bearded giant. Brown pinned the Crusher in the windup after a head-on collission (sic) in the ring.  The Russians still retain their claim to the world title since they refused a title match with Graham in the other corner.”
