1959 Match History
Man Mountain Campbell
Fresh out of the marines Carl Dennis Campbell went to play football at Xavier University. The story that he told me is that he wrote all of the colleges that had recruited him before going into the Marines telling them that he was going to play for whoever payed him the most money. Xavier supposedly wrote back and said they would pay him $1.00 more than the best offer he’d received from the other schools.
He wasn’t there more than a year from what I can find and I’ve heard different stories as to why. I do know that a man that he played football with in the Marines, Frank Townsend, contacted him and introduced him to professional wrestling. The first part of my fathers career intersected with Frank’s in Canada, Minnesota and then Texas.
Before he went to Canada my father had to be trained and that took place in Ohio. That training took place under a man named Al Haft, who was a former professional wrestler himself and co-creator of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). Mr. Haft had a ring and ran wrestling matches in the area. Dad wrestled for his Ohio promotion and was trained under a man named Fred Atkins as well as others. My father told me that Fred Atkins was “double-tough” which was high praise in the professional wrestling business. He didn’t have a very high opinion of Mr. Haft and the stories he told me about him aren’t very flattering.
